As of May 2025, the NHS England Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Taskforce is actively working to enhance ADHD care across England. Chaired by Professor Anita Thapar, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and clinician scientist at Cardiff University, the taskforce aims to address the growing demand for ADHD services and improve patient experiences.
Key Developments
- Interim Report: The taskforce plans to publish an interim report in Spring 2025, outlining early principles for the main report expected in Summer 2025.
- Collaborative Approach: The taskforce includes subgroups of ‘Experts by Experience’—individuals living with ADHD or supporting those who do—and ‘Experts in Evidence’—researchers specializing in ADHD. A clinical reference group comprising senior clinicians with expertise in NHS ADHD care also contributes to the taskforce’s work.
- Cross-Sector Collaboration: To ensure a comprehensive approach, the taskforce collaborates with the Department for Education’s Neurodivergence Task and Finish Group, the Department for Work and Pensions’ expert panel on employment prospects for neurodivergent people, and initiatives within the Ministry of Justice.
NHS England’s ADHD Improvement Programme
In parallel with the taskforce’s efforts, NHS England is undertaking several initiatives:
- Commissioning Framework: Developing a supplier list and commissioning framework to assist Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) in service provision.
- Data Improvement Plan: Finalizing a plan to enhance data collection and begin publishing monthly statistics on ADHD care.
- 10 Year Health Plan Alignment: Assessing further actions required following the publication of the 10 Year Health Plan to ensure alignment with broader NHS objectives.
These combined efforts aim to create a more responsive and effective ADHD care system, addressing current challenges and preparing for future needs.
